cliche はフランス語 cliché に由来し、もとは印刷で同じ型を何度も押して作る「鉛版・決まり型」のことでした。語源は clicher「カチッと型押しする」で、英語 click も近い仲間です。同じ型の文句ばかり繰り返す感じから、「決まり文句」という意味になりました。
Cliche comes from French cliché. It first meant a printing plate or stereotype used to make the same text again and again, from clicher, meaning to click or stamp into a mold. Because the same fixed form was repeated, the word later came to mean an overused phrase or idea. It is related in sense to English click.
