特定のグループの成員であることを示すために知っているべき言葉やフレーズ、また集団を区別する慣習や信条。聖書の時代に、特定の発音ができるかどうかで敵か味方かを見分けるために使われた言葉に由来する。
A word, phrase, belief, or custom that shows whether someone belongs to a particular group. It can also mean an idea or saying that people repeat as a sign of shared identity. The word is often used in social, political, or cultural discussion.

shibboleth はヘブライ語 shibboleth「麦の穂・流れ」に由来し、旧約聖書では発音の違いで敵味方を見分ける合言葉になった。そこから「内輪だけが通じる識別語」の意となり、同系の shibbolethic にも境界を示す感覚がある。
Shibboleth comes from Hebrew shibboleth, meaning "ear of grain" or "stream." In the Hebrew Bible, it became a test word used to tell one group from another by pronunciation. From that story, English developed the sense of a word or phrase that marks membership in a group.
