オスマン帝国の統治下にあった19世紀から20世紀初頭のエジプトの支配者の称号。トルコ起源の高い身分を示す爵位で、ナポレオンとの戦争後の時代に使用された。
A khedive was a historical title for the ruler of Egypt, especially when Egypt was under the Ottoman Empire. It is mainly used in history and is similar to the idea of a viceroy or high governor.

khedive はフランス語 khédive を経てトルコ語 hidiv から入り、さらにペルシア語 khidiw「君主・主人」にさかのぼる称号です。同系の khuda「主」と比べると、単なる官職名でなく、エジプト副王を「主人として統べる者」と見る響きが語の中に残っています。
Khedive came into English through French khédive, from Turkish hidiv, and earlier from Persian khidiw, meaning "lord" or "ruler." The title kept the sense of a person who holds power as a master. It is related in origin to Persian khuda, also meaning "lord."
