damson は「ダマスカスの梅」を意味したラテン語 prunum Damascenum 由来で、シリアの Damascus の地名が縮まって残った語です。damask や damascene も同じ都市名にちなみ、果物名に産地ブランドがそのまま刻まれているとわかります。
