陳腐な言葉とは、使い古された陳腐な表現や、新鮮さを失った決まり文句を指します。化学では臭化物を意味することもあります。

bromide はギリシャ語 bromos「悪臭」を語源にもつ bromine に、化学語尾 -ide が付いた語。もとは臭素化合物だが、臭化物が鎮静剤に使われたため「眠くなるほど退屈な決まり文句」の比喩になった。bromine や brominate も同根。
Bromide comes from bromine plus the chemical ending -ide. Bromine itself comes from Greek bromos, meaning "bad smell" or "stench," because of its strong odor. Later, because bromide compounds were used as sedatives, the word also developed a figurative sense for something dull or sleep-inducing; bromine and brominate are related words.
