Caduceus comes from Latin caduceus, which came from Greek kerykeion. Its root is keryx, meaning "herald" or "messenger." At first it named the staff carried by a herald, and later it became the special staff linked with Hermes. The older sense of a messenger’s symbol stayed inside the word as its meaning changed.
