emblem はギリシャ語 emblema「はめ込まれた飾り」が、ラテン語・フランス語を経て入った語です。em-「中へ」+ -blem〈ballein「投げ込む」〉で、symbol や problem と同根。『意味を中に埋め込んだしるし』という感覚から「紋章・象徴」になりました。
Emblem comes from Greek emblema, meaning something inserted or inlaid, and it passed through Latin and French into English. It is built from em- meaning "in" and a root related to ballein, "to throw," which also appears in symbol and problem. From the idea of an ornament set into something, it developed into a visible sign that carries a deeper meaning.
