A sigil is a special symbol or sign, often believed to have magical power or meaning. It is commonly used in fantasy, occult, or mystical contexts. In some modern uses, it can also mean a symbolic design representing an idea or group.

sigil は sign, signal, signature など「しるし」系の基本語から連想すると覚えやすい。普通の mark や symbol ではなく、“意味があるだけでなく力まで宿していそうな印”という濃いニュアンスで固定すると残る。ファンタジーでは magical sigil, draw a sigil, carve a sigil, protective sigil の形で出やすい。家紋やロゴのような一般的な emblem より、儀式・魔術・召喚・結界の場面で使う特別な紋章として押さえる。glyph は文字っぽい形、emblem は紋章一般、sigil は神秘用途、と切り分けると混同しにくい。

Sigil comes from Latin sigillum, meaning "small seal" or "little mark." It is related to the same root as sign, and also to signal and seal. It first referred to an official mark of authority, and later its sense widened to a special symbolic mark, especially in magic.
