ensign は古フランス語 enseigne を経て、ラテン語 insignia「しるし・徽章」にさかのぼる。in- と signum「印」に分けられ、sign や insignia と同根なので、「目印の旗」が旗そのものや旗手、さらに少尉を指す流れが見える。
