harass は中世フランス語 harasser に由来し、さらに harer「犬をけしかける」というゲルマン系の語に通じるとされます。harassment や harry も近い仲間で、相手を休ませず執拗に追い立てるイメージが、「嫌がらせする」の芯にあります。
"Harass" comes from Middle French harasser, and it is probably linked to a Germanic word meaning "to set dogs on." The early image is of chasing or driving someone without giving them rest.
