persecute はラテン語 persequi「執拗に追う」から来て、per-「徹底的に」+ sequi「追う・従う」に分けられます。単なる追跡ではなく、どこまでも付きまとう感じが「迫害する」へ変わりました。sequence や sequel も sequi と同根です。
Persecute comes from Latin persequi, meaning "to pursue constantly," from per- "thoroughly" and sequi "to follow."
