続編は、以前の作品に続く新しい作品のことです。映画や本などで、前の物語の後に起こることを描いた作品です。元の作品の後編または続きの物語です。
A sequel is a book, movie, or other story that continues the events of an earlier one. It usually keeps some of the same characters or setting. The word is mainly used in entertainment.

sequence（順序・連続）を知っていると覚えやすく、sequel は「前作のあとに続く一作」という感覚でつかむと定着しやすいです。よく見る形は movie sequel, a sequel to ... で、映画や小説の文脈で頻出します。単なる「シリーズ作品」よりも、「前の物語を受けて話が先へ進む続編」を強く示す語です。反対向きの prequel（前日譚）とセットで置くと、時間の向きまで整理できて混同しにくくなります。

「sequel」はラテン語 sequi「続く・後について行く」から出た sequela に由来し、語幹 sequ- に「結果として続くもの」という名詞形が重なった語。sequence や consecutive と同根で、続編が単なる追加ではなく「前作のあとを必然的に追うもの」だとわかる。
"Sequel" comes from Latin sequela, from sequi, meaning "to follow." It belongs to the same family as "sequence" and "consecutive." The original idea was something that follows as a result or continuation, and this later became the usual meaning of a work that continues the story of an earlier one.
