前日譚

既に公開・発表された物語や作品よりも時間的に前の出来事を描く作品を指します。続編に対する語で、登場人物の過去や世界観の成り立ちを後から補うために作られることが多く、「前編」のように単なる最初の部分を意味する語ではありません。
A prequel is a story made after another story but set at an earlier time. It shows events that happened before the original story. This word is common in books, movies, and TV series.

pre- は preview / predict などでおなじみの「前もって」。そこに sequel「続編」が付くので、prequel は『sequel の前に位置する話』と考えると覚えやすいです。ここでいう前は公開順ではなく時間軸の前。単なる第1作や前編ではなく、既存作品の過去を後から描く作品を指します。sequel＝後日談、prequel＝前日譚、という対比でセット記憶すると強いです。
