クジラは海に住む巨大な哺乳類で、肺呼吸をする。シロナガスクジラやザトウクジラなど多様な種類があり、プランクトンや小魚を食べるものもいる。海洋生態系に重要な役割を果たし、長距離を移動して繁殖地と餌場を行き来する。

whale の語源・成り立ち Etymology
「whale」は古英語 hwæl、さらにゲルマン祖語にさかのぼる非常に古い海獣の名で、はっきりした接頭辞・接尾辞の分解はない。narwhal や whalebone に同じ語幹が残り、学術分類より前から「巨大な海の生き物」として人々に強く認識されていた語だと感じられる。
