「narwhal」は北欧語系の語で、古ノルド語 nar「死体」と hvalr「クジラ」に由来します。まだらな灰色の体色が水死体を連想させた名で、「角のあるクジラ」ではなく見た目の不気味さが語源なのが面白く、whale や whaler も同じ語根です。
