visage は古フランス語 visage「顔つき」に由来し、さらにラテン語 visus「見ること・見え方」へさかのぼる。vision や visible と同根で、もともと「見えるもの」がその人の「顔立ち」になったと考えると意味の伸びが見える。
Visage came into English through Old French visage, meaning "face" or "appearance." It goes back to Latin visus, meaning "sight" or "what is seen." The sense seems to have moved from "that which is seen" to a person's visible face. It shares a root with vision and visible.
