フランス語 harasser（疲れさせる・悩ませる）の名詞形。さらに古フランス語 harer（犬をけしかける）に遡り、狩猟で獣を追い立てる行為が原義。接尾辞 -ment は行為・状態を表す。関連語に harass（嫌がらせをする）、harry（繰り返し攻撃する）がある。「執拗に追い立てる」感覚が現代の意味に直結する。
"Harassment" comes from French harasser, with the noun ending "-ment." The older idea may go back to Old French harer, meaning to set dogs on someone or chase prey in hunting.
