古ノルド語で Dan（デーン人）＋ mark（境界地・森の土地）を合わせた地名で、「デーン人の土地」を意味する。デーン人はゲルマン系民族の一派。同じ mark を含む地名に landmark（目印の地）やemark（辺境）がある。ヴァイキング時代の領土意識がそのまま国名として残った例である。
Denmark comes from Old Norse elements: Dan, referring to the Danes, and mark, meaning a borderland or wooded region. So the name originally meant "the land of the Danes."
