Synecdoche is a figure of speech in which a part of something is used to mean the whole, or the whole is used to mean a part. It is mainly used in literature, rhetoric, and language analysis to describe this special kind of word choice.

まず「部分で全体、全体で部分」を言う技法だと、代表例ごと覚えるのが近道です。handで「手」ではなく人手・助力全体、wheelsで車全体、Japanで日本代表を指す、のように“近いラベルで範囲をずらす”感覚が核。metaphorのように似ているものへ飛ぶ比喩ではなく、あくまで同じ対象の一部と全体を入れ替える表現だと整理すると定着しやすい。綴りは難しいので、意味は part-whole swap の型で押さえると忘れにくいです。

synecdocheはギリシャ語synekdokheに由来し、syn-「共に」+ ek-「外へ」+ dekhesthai「受け取る・理解する」から成る。ある語で別の範囲まで「まとめて受け取る」感覚が、部分で全体を言う提喩につながり、synergyやsynchronizeのsyn-と同じ発想がある。
Synecdoche comes from Greek synekdokhe, built from syn- "together," ek- "out," and a verb meaning "to receive" or "understand." The original idea is of taking one thing together with something larger or related. That developed into the rhetorical sense where a part stands for a whole, or a whole for a part.
