A substratum is a basic layer or foundation under something else. It can be a physical layer under the ground or water, or a hidden underlying element in language, culture, or ideas. The word is mostly used in formal or academic contexts.

sub- は subway, subtitle と同じく「下」を示す形。そこに stratum（層）の仲間が付いているので、「下にある層」「表面を支える土台の層」とまとめて覚えると残りやすいです。stratum が単なる一層なのに対し、substratum はその下で全体を支える基盤という感じ。substrate にかなり近いですが、substratum はより硬めの学術語。地質なら岩や土の下層、生物学なら何かが育つ・付着する土台を思い浮かべると定着します。

ラテン語 substratum（下に敷かれたもの）に由来し、sub-「下に」＋sternere「広げて敷く」から成ります。stratum や substrate と同根で、「下に一層あるもの」から基盤・基質の意味になりました。
