ラテン語 substratum（下に敷かれたもの）に由来し、sub-「下に」＋sternere「広げて敷く」から成ります。stratum や substrate と同根で、「下に一層あるもの」から基盤・基質の意味になりました。
Substratum comes from Latin substratum, meaning "something spread underneath." It is made from sub- "under" and sternere "to spread or lay down," which is also behind stratum and substrate. The sense moved from a physical layer underneath to any underlying base or supporting layer.
