The doldrums are a state of low activity, low energy, or little progress. The word is often used for business, creativity, or a person's mood. It can also refer to a place near the equator known for very weak winds, but the figurative meaning is more common.

doldrums は、古い英語の dold「沈んだ気分・愚鈍さ」に、俗語的な語尾 -rums が付いた語とされる。dull や dullard と近い語感を持ち、気分の停滞を表す語が、風まで止まった海の「無風」を指すようになった。
Doldrums is thought to come from an old English word dold, meaning dullness or low spirits, with the added ending -rums. It first suggested a sluggish or gloomy state of mind. From that idea of stillness and lack of energy, it was later used for the calm sea areas where the wind seems to stop.
