guarana はブラジル系ポルトガル語 guaraná を経て、アマゾン先住民語サテレ・マウェ語 warana にさかのぼる借用語です。guaraná や guaranine と同根で、効能名ではなくまず現地植物の固有名が広まった語だと知ると、南米由来の飲料語らしさが見えてきます。
Guarana came into English from Brazilian Portuguese guarana. That word was borrowed from Sateré-Mawé, an Indigenous language of the Amazon, where the plant had its local name. So the English word did not begin as a scientific term, but as the original name of the plant itself; related forms include guaraná and guaranine.
