typology はギリシャ語 typos「型・刻印」と logos「学・ことば」に由来し、type + -logy と見ればよい。もともと typos は「打って残る跡」なので、ものを共通の型で読む学問になった。type や typography も同根で、「型を見る」感覚が核にある。
