taxonomy はギリシャ語 taxis「配列、秩序」と -nomy「法、体系」に由来し、原義は「並べ方の規則」。そこから生物などを一定の基準で整理する「分類学」となり、語の形自体が「秩序立てて名づけ分ける学問」だと教えてくれる。関連語は syntax, astronomy。
Taxonomy comes from Greek taxis, meaning arrangement or order, and -nomy, meaning a system or rule. The original sense was about a method of arranging things in an ordered way. From there, it became the name for the systematic classification of living things and later other kinds of categories. A related English word is syntax, which also comes from taxis.
