hierarchy はギリシャ語 hierarkhia に由来し、hiero-「神聖な」+ -archy「支配・統治」に分けられる。もとは教会の聖職位階を指し、「神に近い順の並び」が一般の階層構造へ広がった。monarchy や anarchy にも同じ archy が見える。
Hierarchy comes from Greek hierarkhia, built from hieros meaning "sacred" and a form related to rule or leadership, seen also in -archy. It first referred to ranks of sacred or church authority.
