ランキングとは、複数の人や物を評価し、その結果に基づいて順位をつけたリストです。スポーツの成績や試験結果、商品の人気度など、競争や評価の結果を表すために使われます。
Ranking is the position of someone or something in relation to others in a list or system. It is often used in sports, schools, businesses, and online search results. A higher ranking usually means better performance or greater importance.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
rank（順位・地位）が分かれば、ranking は「順位をつけること」「順位表」と自然に取れる。名詞の rank に -ing が付いて、結果として並んだ順番のイメージ。スポーツなら world ranking、商品なら sales ranking の形で覚えると定着しやすい。move up in the rankings / drop in the rankings のように上下の動きと結びつけると記憶に残る。似た語 rating は「評価点・格付け」で、順位表そのものではない点に注意。

ranking は rank＋-ing で、rank は古フランス語 ranc/rang「列、段」を経て、フランク語系 *hring「輪・並び」に由来します。もとは人や物が横一列に並ぶことなので、そこから「順に位置づけること」「順位表」という意味が生まれました。関連語は rank, rink。
Ranking is formed from rank plus the suffix -ing. Rank came through Old French from a Germanic root meaning something like "row" or "line," so the basic idea was people or things arranged in order. From that sense, ranking came to mean the act of placing in order, and then a list or position in that order. Related words include rank and rink.
