古英語 ræt からゲルマン祖語に遡る。ラテン語 rodere（かじる）との関連も指摘され、「かじる動物」が原義とされる。関連語: rodent（齧歯類）、erode（浸食する）。裏切り者の俗語用法は、沈む船から逃げるネズミの比喩に由来する。
Rat comes from Old English ræt and goes back to an early Germanic word. It is often linked with the idea of gnawing, like Latin rodere, "to gnaw," which also appears in words such as rodent and erode. The later slang use for a traitor grew from the image of rats running away from danger. The oldest sense, though, is the animal name.
