ratting には二つの系列があります。密告の意味は rat + -ing で、rat は中英語 rat に由来し、「裏切り者」の俗語連想から来ます。一方、カタカタ鳴る意味は rattle 系の短縮・変形として理解するとよく、結論として「音を立てる」と「密告する」は別の入口から同じ形に集まった語です。
