neutral の語源・成り立ち Etymology
neutral はラテン語 neutralis にさかのぼり、ne-「〜でない」+ uter「二者のうちどちらか」から成ります。もともと「どちらでもない」が核なので、「中立的な」の意味に自然につながります。関連語は neater ではなく neuter, neutralize です。
Neutral comes from Latin neutralis, built from ne- meaning "not" and uter meaning "which of two." So its basic idea was "neither of the two." That sense naturally developed into the modern meaning of not taking either side; compare neuter and neutralize.
