objective の語源・成り立ち Etymology
objective はラテン語 obiectivus にさかのぼり、ob-「前へ」＋jacere「投げる」から成ります。もともと「前に投げ出されたもの」なので、主観の外にある対象・目標という意味になり、関連語に object, subject があります。
Objective comes from Medieval Latin obiectivus, based on Latin ob- "before, in front of" and jacere "to throw." The original image is of something "thrown before" the mind or placed in front of a person. From that idea, it came to suggest something outside personal feeling, and also something set before you as a target. Related words include object and subject.
