To neutralise something means to make it less strong, harmful, or effective, or to bring it to a balanced state. It is commonly used in science for acids and chemicals, and more generally for threats, smells, or negative effects.

neutralise は neutral「中立の」に -ise が付いた語で、フランス語 neutraliser を経てラテン語 neutralis にさかのぼります。neutralis は ne-「〜でない」+ uter「二者のどちらか」から成り、「どちらにも偏らせない」感覚から「中和する」になりました。関連語は neutral, neuter.
Neutralise is built from neutral and the ending -ise, and it also reflects French neutraliser. Neutral goes back to Latin neutralis, from ne- "not" and uter "either of two."
