pranking の prank は語源がやや不確かですが、中低地ドイツ語 pronken（見せびらかす）系と結びつけられます。prankster も同じ語幹を持つので、もとは目立つふるまいが、人をひっかける「いたずら」へずれた語だと考えると腑に落ちます。
Pranking comes from prank with the ending -ing. Prank is of uncertain origin, but it is often linked to Middle Dutch or Low German words such as pronken, meaning "to show off" or "strut." The sense seems to have shifted from flashy or playful behavior to a mischievous trick. Prankster was later formed from the same base.
