解説 Definition
ontology は、何が存在すると言えるのか、存在するものをどのように分類できるのかを考える哲学の分野である。もの・概念・関係の成り立ちを整理し、世界の基本的な構造や存在のあり方を理論的に捉えようとする学問を指す。
Ontology is the study of what exists and how different kinds of things are related. It is mainly used in philosophy, but it can also describe a system for organizing knowledge in fields like computer science. The word often refers to categories, types, and relationships.

ontology は -logy が付くので「〜学」の仲間とまず押さえる。biology が生命、geology が地質を扱うのに対し、ontology はもっと土台で、「何が存在者として数えられるか」を分類する学問。ontological はその形容詞。epistemology が「どう知るか」を問うのに対し、ontology は「そもそも何があるか」を問う、と対比すると定着しやすい。AI 文脈では knowledge graph や data model で entity の種類を決める話にも出る。
Notice the ending `-logy`, the same family as `biology` and `geology`. That tells you it is a field of study. To remember it, pair it with `epistemology`: epistemology asks how we know, while ontology asks what is there in the first place.

ontology はギリシャ語 ont-「あるもの・存在するもの」と logia「学問」から成り、「存在そのものを調べる学」が原義です。ontic や ontological も同じ ont- を持ち、何が実在すると言えるのかを問う語だと見えてきます。
Ontology comes from modern Latin ontologia, built from Greek ont- meaning "being" or "what exists" and -logia meaning "study." Its original sense was the study of being itself, especially what can be said to truly exist. Related English words like ontic and ontological keep the same root about existence.
