Epistemology is the branch of philosophy that studies knowledge and belief. It asks questions about what knowledge is, how people know things, and what makes a belief reliable or true. The word is mainly used in academic or philosophical discussion.

まず `-logy` を見たら biology, psychology と同じく「学問・論」と捉える。問題は前半だが、この語は日常物ではなく philosophy の中で、knowledge / truth / belief をどう正当化できるかを考える分野名。psychology が「心の働き」なら、epistemology は「知っていると言える条件」。epistemic, epistemological も同じ話題圏の語としてまとめて覚えると定着しやすい。
