英語 pecan は米仏語 pacane を経て、北米先住民イリノイ語 pakani にさかのぼる名です。分解語ではなく、食べられる木の実の名が英語化し、その実をつける木や木材も pecan と呼ぶようになりました。関連形に仏語 pacane があります。
English pecan came through American French pacane from an Illinois-language word, usually given as pakani. It was originally a Native North American name for a nut that had to be cracked before eating. In English, the name stayed close to that original sense, with the nut itself more central than the tree.
