英語 pecan は米仏語 pacane を経て、北米先住民イリノイ語 pakani にさかのぼる名です。分解語ではなく、「殻を割って食べる木の実」という呼び名がそのまま英語化したので、木より実の印象が前面に出ます。関連形に仏語 pacane があります。
English pecan came through American French pacane from an Illinois-language word, usually given as pakani. It was originally a Native North American name for a nut that had to be cracked before eating. In English, the name stayed close to that original sense, with the nut itself more central than the tree.
