ギリシャ語 meta「後に・超えて」+ physika「自然に関するもの」が語源。もとはアリストテレスの『自然学』の後ろに置かれた書物名で、そこから「自然を超えた原理を問う学」へ広がった。physics、physical も同じ phys- を受け継ぐ。
Metaphysics comes from Greek meta, meaning "after" or "beyond," and physika, meaning "things about nature."
