atrocious はラテン語 atrox（語幹 atroc-）「残酷な・荒々しい」に形容詞語尾 -ious が付いた語で、フランス語経由で英語に入りました。atrocity も同根で、もとは野獣じみた激しさを指した感覚が、いまの「ひどい」「むごい」という強い非難に育った語です。
