英語 abysm + -al からでき、abysm は古フランス語 abisme、さらに後期ラテン語 abyssus、ギリシャ語 abyssos「底なし」へ遡る。a-「無い」+ byssos「底」で、「底知れない深さ」から「ひどい」の意味が生まれた。関連語は abyss, abyssal。
From abysm plus -al. Abysm came through Old French and Late Latin from Greek abyssos, meaning "bottomless," from a- "not" and byssos "depth" or "bottom." The image of something immeasurably deep later helped give abysmal its stronger figurative sense.
