excellent はラテン語 excellens に由来し、ex-「外へ」と cellere「高く上がる・抜きんでる」から成る。excel・excellence と同根で、「他より高く抜け出る」が転じて「素晴らしい」という意味になった。
Excellent comes through Old French excellent from Latin excellentem (nominative excellens), the present participle of excellere, meaning "to rise above, be eminent, or surpass."
