abysmally は abyss「深淵」に -al と -ly が付いた語で、abyss はギリシャ語 abyssos「底なし」に由来する。a-「ない」+ byssos「底」から、「底が見えないほど深い」が原感覚。abyss や abyssal と同根で、その深さの比喩から「ひどく」へ広がった。
