英語 bourdon は中英語 burdoun を経て古フランス語 bordon、さらに中世ラテン語 burdonom にさかのぼり、もとは「マルハナバチ」「羽音」の意。蜂のぶんぶんいう音が転じて持続する低音を表すようになり、関連語に burden（反復句）や fauxbourdon がある。
