Reusability is the quality of being able to be used again, either for the same purpose or a different one. It is common in discussions about software, design, products, and environmental sustainability. High reusability usually means less waste and more efficiency.

まず core は use「使う」。そこに re- が付くと reuse「再利用する」、さらに -ability が付くと「〜できる性質」になり、reusability は「再利用しやすさ」とまとめて取れる。software design では usability「使いやすさ」と混同しやすいが、usability は1人の利用者にとっての使いやすさ、reusability は部品やコードを別の場面でも使い回せる度合い。 reusable components, code reusability の形で覚えると定着しやすい。

reusability は re-「再び」+ use「使う」+ -able「できる」+ -ity「性質」から成る。use は古フランス語 user、さらにラテン語 uti「用いる」にさかのぼるため、「もう一度使える性質」が語全体にそのまま表れている。同根語に use、abuse。
