悪事・残虐行為・苦痛などが、あまりにひどくて口にするのもはばかられる場合に使います。単に「言葉で表せない」という意味ではなく、強い嫌悪や道徳的非難をこめて「口に出せないほどひどい」と述べる語です。
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
まず speak「話す」が見えれば中心はつかめます。un- が付いて「話せない」、-able で「〜できる」なので、直感的には「とても口にできない」。ただし単なる無言ではなく、ひどさ・恐ろしさ・不快さが強すぎて言葉にするのもはばかられる感じです。unspeakable cruelty / horror のような強い名詞と結びつけて覚えると定着しやすいです。speechless が『驚いて言葉が出ない』なのに対し、unspeakable は『内容がひどすぎて口にしにくい』寄りです。
