Ontogeny is the process of how a living thing develops from its earliest stage to its mature form. This is a biology term used when talking about the growth of an individual organism.

まず後半の -geny を gene, generate, genesis の仲間として見て「生じる・発達する」とつかむと覚えやすい語です。生物学では ontogeny of an organism のように、1個体が胚から成体へ育つ流れを指します。対比で覚えるなら phylogeny は種全体の系統・進化、ontogeny はその個体自身の発生。ontology と見た目が近いので混同注意で、「-togeny は発生過程」と固定すると残りやすいです。
The ending `-geny` is related to `gene`, `generate`, and `genesis`, so it gives the idea of growth or development. A useful contrast is `phylogeny` for the history of a species, but `ontogeny` for the development of one individual organism.
