A taxon is a group of living things that are classified together in biology. It can refer to any level in scientific classification, such as a species, genus, or family.

taxon は taxonomy（分類学）を知っていると覚えやすい語で、「分類の体系そのもの」ではなく、その体系の中でひとまとまりとして扱われる単位を指します。species や genus のように、どの階層でも「一つの分類単位」なら taxon。taxonomy が地図なら、taxon は地図上の区分、という感覚で置くと定着しやすいです。taxonomic は形容詞なので混同注意。生物の分類表や系統図を見た場面と結びつけると記憶に残ります。

ドイツ語Taxonから英語に入り、さらにtaxonomyの短縮形に由来する学術語。語根はギリシャ語taxis「配列・秩序」で、関連語はtaxonomy、tactic。ものを整然と並べる発想から、「分類上のひとまとまり」の意味になった。
Taxon entered English as a scientific term from German Taxon, and it is connected with taxonomy. The deeper source is Greek taxis, meaning "arrangement" or "order," which also appears in words like tactic and taxonomy. From the idea of placing things in an ordered system, it came to mean a unit used in classification.
