A genus is a scientific group of related living things, especially plants or animals. It is one level in biological classification and usually includes several closely connected species. This word is mainly used in science and academic contexts.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
genus は biology の分類語として、species とセットで覚えると定着しやすいです。species が「個々の種」なら、genus はその上で近い species をまとめる「ひとつ上の箱」。general や generic の「細かい違いより、同じ種類として大きくくくる」感覚につなげると覚えやすいです。学名では Homo sapiens の Homo のように先頭語が genus になりやすい、という形でも記憶できます。genius とつづりが近いので混同注意。

genus はラテン語で「生まれ・種族・種類」を表し、語根 gen- は「生む」に通じます。生まれを同じくするものを一まとまりで見る発想から「属」という意味になり、generate や generic も同じ根から来ています。
Genus comes from Latin genus, meaning "birth," "race," or "kind." It is built on the root gen-, meaning "produce" or "beget." From the idea of things born from the same source, it came to mean a group or type; related English words include generate and generic.
