人間の可聴域を超える高い周波数の音波に関する、または超音波を利用することを表す形容詞。医療画像検査、洗浄、センサー、工業検査などについて用いられる。
Ultrasonic describes sound waves with a frequency higher than humans can hear, or equipment and processes that use such waves. It is common in science, medicine, and technology, as in ultrasonic sensors, cleaning, and medical imaging.

ultra は「超」、sonic は sonic boom などの「音の」。ultrasonic は「超音速」ではなく「超音波の」で、ultrasonic waves や ultrasonic cleaner のように、人には聞こえない高い周波数の音や、それを使う装置を修飾する。supersonic は速度、ultrasonic は音の周波数、と切り分けるとよい。
