ソナーは水中で音波を発射し、反射して戻ってくるエコーを分析して周囲の物体の位置や距離を割り出す装置です。軍艦や潜水艦では敵の艦艇や障害物を見つけるため、漁船では魚群の分布を把握するために利用されます。音波の到達時間や強さから方向や深さも推測できます。
