覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
radio detecting and ranging の頭文字からできた語。「電波で探知し、距離を測る」という仕組みが名前に入っています。航空機なら use radar、天気なら weather radar、画面上の反応なら on radar と結び付け、電波で対象の位置や動きを捉える場面を思い浮かべましょう。
Remember radar through the words behind its name: radio detecting and ranging. A radar device sends out radio waves, detects their return, and uses them to find an object's position or distance. Picture a pilot using radar to locate other planes, a ship checking nearby vessels, or a weather service tracking a storm. Useful combinations include weather radar, radar screen, use radar, and appear on radar. These situations all share the same core idea: detecting something at a distance with radio waves.
例文
The ship has radar.

Pilots use radar to see other planes.
パイロットは他の飛行機を確認するためにレーダーを使います。
radar の語源・成り立ち Etymology
radar は 20世紀英語の頭字語で、radio detecting and ranging を縮めた語です。radio「電波」と detect「見つける」、range「距離を測る」がそのまま組み合わさっており、「電波で探知して距離を出す」装置だと語形から納得できます。関連語は radio、radiate です。
Radar was coined in twentieth-century American English as an acronym based on radio detecting and ranging. The name directly describes the technology: radio waves are used for detection and for determining the range, or distance, of an object. Although it began as an acronym, radar became an ordinary common noun and is now normally written in lowercase. The term was developed during the period when radar technology was rapidly advancing for military and navigational use.
