detecting
Definition
Finding or identifying the presence of something that is hidden, faint, unusual, or not immediately obvious. The form often describes the function of a person, device, test, or system, as in detecting smoke, disease, signals, or suspicious activity.
Memory Tip
Detecting is detect plus -ing; no letter is dropped or doubled. Keep the base meaning of detect in mind: uncovering something that is present but concealed, faint, or difficult to notice. Picture a smoke detector finding a tiny trace, a medical test identifying early cancer, or software recognizing unusual network activity. Common frames include a method for detecting something and a system capable of detecting something. Compared with discover, detect more often suggests purposeful observation, testing, measurement, or recognition of a signal, trace, problem, or hidden presence.

Etymology
detecting は detect+-ing。
Detecting is the -ing form of detect. Detect comes from Latin detegere, formed from de-, expressing removal, and tegere, “to cover.” Its literal sense was to uncover or expose, which developed into finding something concealed or recognizing evidence of its presence. English retains that idea in contexts such as detecting smoke, disease, fraud, or a signal: observation or a device effectively removes the covering from what was not obvious.
